Fair play to Drew. He went out and had a bit of fun in his golf (and what's the point of having a fast car with all the costs that it entails if you are not going to boot it occasionally?) and then decided to tell likeminded people (at least I think most people on here are in to having fun with golfs and other assorted VW's) about it, and then gets branded a Chav? WTF? I don't know if anyone will remember it but there was an article in a mag (may have been top gear but not sure) a while back where they took a whole load of cars, including Lambos, Ferarris, Porches, TVRs, A MKI Golf with a 1.8T Lump, and some others and timed them all around a track. And which car set the fastest lap? The Golf! They have a lot of potential, are damn fun cars as standard, and for many are a far more enjoyable car to drive than many new cars. The fastest, best handling car does not neccesarily mean the most fun.
I appriciate you point Claire but I have beat all of these with this poxy old heap I did once beat one of these but I did use one of these Edited by: jonboy
I think i'd like to have a blat in a fast"" mk1 just for the experiance. But as a car R32 definately. But then i'd rather take a japanese cheapo old sports car then the lot
How did I miss this thread?! Rob - You should have PMed for some reinforcements! Good story Drew - Dad had a new mk1 (many yeasrs ago) that he modded a month after he got it. Almost nothing could keep up with it on a decent road! Seems a bit R32 vs mk1 and 2 YET AGAIN - Totally different cars. Drove 750 miles this weekend on all sorts of roads and the R32 is very quick indeed. It has plenty of power AND TORQUE so it's hard to get caught out in the wrong rev range. Dad had a good drive (he's had Ferraris, Quattro Turbos, Porsches, etc) and genuinely thought it wasn't far off a 911 Carrera 4 in terms of overall feel and power delivery. Obviously not as quick but you get the idea. Other journos have mentioned this too. To be honest you can "win" in all sorts of cars. I had a Saxo VTR from new. You may all laugh but on a tightish road it was very quick just because the chassis was spot on. It seems that a lot of mk1 and 2ers hate all other marks whereas mk3 and 4 owners love them all. Are they just a bit more mature?
...and also... There's too much talk about who's car is fsater, better, whatever. What about actually DRIVING?!! Good to see Drew talking about driving (with maybe a wee mention of "being faster" thrown in but I'll ignore that)!
All my references were purely on traffic light drag race. If I had a long way to go I'd much rather a plush MK4 with all the toys, but how often do you do long journeys? I think this whole thread is based on what people "use" their cars for
Yeah.. good point Golden. I class 'DRIVING' as when i get to take my car on track, or on a really nice twisty country road... not doing 200 miles on a motorway.
You must be on the wrong roads. Plenty of opportunities for proper driving on public roads if you know where to look. Out of the 800 miles driven at the weekend, at least 300 were on uncrowded A and B roads. Being comfortable on the motorway AND having fun on the twisties is where the R32 rules.
I just like driving period, (except traffic jams maybe)- think all this which cars the best stuffs getting a bit tired Surely its not about the car - its about going out and enjoying yourself without endangering anyone I got happily trounced by an elise in my standard mk2 on the way back from malvern show on sunday, overtook a line of traffic only to spot a blue low thing zooming up behind me whent round a couple of bends it was like it was hoovered to the floor! superglued to my ass -no chance I did the honourable thing and let him past got a wave in return. why spoil his day he was doing exactly the same as me only faster "A mans got to know his limitations"- some you " win" some you "dont"
I'm going to sell my mk1 and buy a Rover City so I can behave myself properly with a new car. Either that or 2nd is going to grant me access to his personal monastery for a teach yourself course in self flagilation. Cheers, Drew. ps. Wow! I think this is the only time a topic that I've started has gone to 4 pages... Personal best! Oops. Competitive side coming out again, down boy! Edited by: drew
Without sounding too competitive, it would be nice to gather a few Golfs *both new and old* at somewhere like Bruntingthorpe for GPS timed acceleration runs and lap times around the little circuit they have there. No excuses then, and the results will tell the story
That's VERY mature Every time someone makes a negative comment towards new cars you don't see people like Bill 'sticking up' for new cars like his Ibiza do you? Edited by: G_V_K
