My opinion? Mk1 and mk2 = 3 door, but i prefer mk3's in 5 door, hence why i bought one, plus i have a kiddie to be putting in the back. 16v owns the 8v in all areas imo, but cost more to buy, run, insure and fix. Put another way, my next Mk3, if get another, would be a 5 door 16v (because the VR6 kicks ass but is to thirsty for the milage i do.)
Just time my 8v MK2, did it in around 12sec - I used fourth gear and at 100mph it's just under 6k rpm thats getting close to the red line. I don't think using 3rd would have been any quicker. ( beacase of the gear change).
Matt's (lairy_1 on here) Mk1 G60 running approx 200bhp Early Mk1 1.6 GTI gearbox - very short ratios 13"x8" wheels with 195/45 tyres (giving about 86% rolling radius) No rear seats, but rear cage + us two (big!) blokes Pretty consistent 6.8 seconds in 5th, from indicated 60 to indicated 110 - thought we'd play safe and go lower to higher because of tyres. (Actually works out as an indicated 52-95 if it had 'normal' tyre size. Just worked out that we should try again from indicated 70-115 to more accurately take account of tyres. Doh!)
Here is my stats according to that calculator although 4.83 to 60 seems a bit optermistic due to traction loss Also, dunno the difference in weight of my TT lump and the 8v lump used to quote book weights. Will try soon as it stops bloody rainin and the road is dry!! Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 252 Weight without Driver (KG) : 980 Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 261.27 0 - 60 (Secs) : 4.83 0 - 100 (Secs) : 11.42 60 - 100 (Secs) : 6.59 Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.18 Terminal Speed (MPH) : 107.41 Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.98 Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 109.40
I know it's an oldy (the thread and the car) but 7.64 from the Mk1 today, I'm sure it'll do better when back on Optimax...
Finally got a chance to have a go at this. my 2.0 16v mk2 managed 9.2 secs did have 3 people in the car at the time but still seemed a little sluggish??
