sutherlandm, id love one.... has to be one of the best compromises for my criteria.... Were not all R haters... Just because my golf is faster than an R in a straight line doesnt mean im having a pop.... its was as evidence im not a moaner with a slow arse mk2! (ok so im still a moaner.... lol)

vw_singh, No not really, Ive had some bills to pay on it (new G-Lader was needed last year) but generally its been great! Its fun to drive, it beats most things i want to race on the road (id describe it as able to beat a boxster but keep up with an S) I dont tend to drive over 100mph, but enjoy getting up there quickly. Just ive always had "older hot hatches" and now its time to move on.

Alot of my opinion on this has been formed just by the fact that im growing up now, time to buy a "proper" car, time to buy a house etc...

I`m sorry, I was quoting a buddy of mine that works for BMW ... [:s] Excuse his ignorance.

    Vanos, LSD and 50bhp.

    Ooh.

Ask any BMW die hard and they will tell you. Buy an E30 M3.

I love the Mk1 so much, I think I'll have one for the rest of my life. Would u rather have a 1.8T in a Mk4, or in a Mk1 for outright performance???

    End of story.

dont get me wrong i love the r32

but you know in 5 years your going to be able to pick it up for about 6000. why not wait? 22k is just a joke

but i somehow think people wont speak so highly of it when its just another 'old vw'

DaveR, its your call. Some people will feel the way you do, and i think my parents would prefer if i sold my car and bought a new one too, but i am 25 soon and hopefully buying a house too, but I will not get rid of my mk1 for a long time, hopefully never.

Personally I kind of straddle the old car/new car fence.

If I'd kept all my money in one pot, I could have done one of two things-
bought something like an R32, for about 20k, or built a couple of my
old car projects up using other people to get things done to the highest
    standards.

What I've actually done is split the pot in two, and bought a Bora
V6 4motion, to satisfy my need for modern safe factory warranted fun,
and kept enough money aside to fulfil my old skool 'fun factor' projects.

I have my cake, and here I sit, eating it too [:D]

You cheeky f**ker!!! That was a great post, i'd even go as far as calling it a classic!!!!

I'd say you look like the bell end here, you cant seem to understand that although you have 'grown up' and want a newer car there are others that are older than you (including myself) that still haven't, and maybe never will 'grow up' and get the urge for a newer car.

So f**k off you tool :)

    Good shout that man!!

Ive been looking at V5 bora's passats etc as a work horse.

VW_Singh, My car owes me alot of money but not a stupid amount. If someone (as I assume you have?) has spent 1000's on restoring the car they love then I can completely understand never selling that car, there is no point.

So we've all made the BEST decision about what we've bought and can justify until the day we die.
You have to admit that some of you do talk complete sh1te when it comes to your arguments.
Some of you would never spend 22k on a hatch yet would "easily" spend 42k on an M3??!!!
Some of you can "easily" afford an R32 yet drive 2k mk2s?!!!
I'll only get stroppy so I'll leave it but there is a lot of very poor reasoning going on here.

    I dont follow here.

    Why am I not a `grown up` just because I dont crave the `ultimate driving experience` of a new car [:s]

Why should I get or want a new car ? Just because some other people do ?

Umm ... I`m not a sheep. Ta anyways.

I got my mk1 cos i like lying on a garage floor covered in oil and muck, it passes the time arsing about with later golfs is a pain and not so mush fun and far far less satisfying. I have a fast car, I built it for about 3000 see sig. BUT I also have a MK1 -retro- cool Golf. It handles like a go kart, 100mph gives you a adrenalin rush and makes trips go faster, as you enjoy it.

I drove a Prelude VTEC for a while and I know it leaves my MK1 standing and 4WS is fun, but there is nothing quite like beating some t**ser in a crap french car, in my 22 year old banger and wiping that stupid smirk of the burberry wearing, baseball cap wearing chavs face!!
